About Catbird Stats
Founded in 2022, Catbird Stats helps ecological and environmental professionals maximize the impact of their data through detailed data visualization, statistical analysis, and development of custom reusable code.
In birding, as in data analysis, important signals are often hidden among noise. Finding them comes from carefully observing, asking the right questions, and methodically narrowing in on the answer.
That mindset guides Catbird Stats. We will help you uncover patterns, insights, and opportunities in your data that may not be immediately obvious and help you bring clarity to complex systems and build confidence in your decision-making.
Meet Your Data Expert
Kim Cressman is the founder and principal statistician of Catbird Stats, with graduate training in marine biology and applied statistics. Kim has extensive experience in long-term environmental monitoring, water quality, and community ecology across freshwater and coastal systems in the southeastern United States.
Kim has worked for city and state environmental and natural resource agencies, university researchers, and nonprofit research and conservation organizations, helping teams turn complex datasets into clear, actionable insights.
An avid birder, Kim credits her data analysis skills in part to the many hours observing birds in the wild. When she first started, she struggled to identify birds that live high in trees, where you only catch brief glimpses of color and movement through dense foliage. One of the first birds she correctly identified in those conditions was a gray catbird in a cypress swamp. Identifying that bird was deeply satisfying, like solving a puzzle and realizing she had the tools to solve more. She brings that same curiosity and passion to data and statistics.

Working with Catbird
Catbird’s rigorous, thoughtful approach prioritizes transparency and reproducibility. All analyses are carefully documented so you can understand the process, trust the results, and build on the work in the future. Our goal is not just to deliver answers, but to leave you better equipped to work with your data over the long term.
There’s often more potential in your data than meets the eye. Catbird Stats is here to help you uncover it. Get in touch to share your project and explore how we can work together.
“Kim was an excellent resource in creating an accessible, replicable R script summarizing multiple different types of datasets for a BACI design restoration monitoring project. As with most field based datasets, these data were a bit messy and presented some challenges. Kim was a dream to work with and produced a very useful product!”
Becky Swerida, Chesapeake Bay National Estuarine Research Reserve (Maryland)
“Catbird Stats has been terrific to work with. I’ve collaborated with Kim on multiple projects, in multiple capacities, ranging from Kim leading original analyses to implementing an existing analysis plan. Across the board Kim has been a pleasure to work with, highly knowledgeable, and generates fantastic products. Kim’s knowledge of statistical applications has brought a new dimension to the teams we have been on together, and I look forward to working with Catbird more in the future.”
Robert Dunn, North Inlet-Winyah Bay National Estuarine Research Reserve & University of South Carolina
“Kim generated code that allowed us to visualize our data with high-quality interactive plots. She was always prompt, prepared, and willing to provide further assistance whenever needed. We highly recommend Kim for any data visualization and analysis needs!”
